Mathematics

The Mathematics Department is housed in four dedicated rooms, each equipped with interactive smart boards and located in the Mathematics and Science building.

There are two or three teaching groups within each year group; students are organised into sets duirng Year 7, though movement between sets occurs regularly in Years 7 and 8 according to ability. Lesson time is supported by homework, online support and extension materials, lectures and visits and the opportunity to enter the UK Junior or Intermediate Mathematics Individual and Team Challenges.

Maths lesson

The GCSE course follows the Edexcel specification and requires students to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and skills in the following areas:

  • Using and applying mathematics
  • Number and algebra
  • Shape, space and measure
  • Handling data

In addition, students are expected to develop Functional Skills which allow them to interpret mathematical ideas in content and select information in order to solve a problem.
